The museum will play host to its 21st Annual Snapping Turtle Walk beginning at 7:30 a.m. on June 13 at its location at 1601 Route 9 in Garrison.
Members of the Constitution Marsh Audubon Center and Sanctuary staff will be on hand to discuss the habits and history of these living fossils that live to be more than 100 years old, and to introduce live specimens to the audience. After the discussion, guests are invited to walk Boscobel’s grounds to possibly observe nesting female turtles.
Each June, the female turtles climb the steep hill from the Constitution Marsh Audubon Center and Sanctuary, located just below the Boscobel House, to the museum’s lush lawns where they deposit between 20-60 eggs, the size and color of ping pong balls.
“In addition to preserving our iconic historic mansion, Boscobel enthusiastically supports the preservation of the landscape in which we are situated,” said Boscobel Executive Director Steve Miller in a statement.
“Our neighbor on the river, Constitution Marsh, is home to about 1,000 snapping turtles. These resolute reptiles find our grounds ideally suited for ‘planting’ eggs each spring, and their hatchlings, just as determined, find their way back to the marsh. We are delighted to host not only this amazing act of nature, but also the unique and informative presentation given by the marsh life preservationists at Constitution Marsh Audubon Center and Sanctuary.”
Complimentary coffee and donuts will be available at 7:30 a.m. Admission is $12 for adults for this rain or shine event, $8 for children age 6-12 and free to children under the age of six. Friends of Boscobel members receive a 10 percent discount. Purchase tickets online at boscobel.org or at the door.
Boscobel is open April through October from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the first tour at 10 a.m. and the last at 4 p.m. -- 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. between November and December. The House Museum and gift shop at Boscobel are open every day except Tuesdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
