Putnam Salutes Our Troops With Memorial Day Parades, Remembrances

PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. -- Memorial Day, which is officially celebrated Monday May 30 but unofficially begins just around now, isn't just about savoring the long weekend and easing into summer mode; it's first and foremost about honoring the men and women who have died serving in our armed forces.

The following is a sampling of parades and dedications taking place across Putnam. Feel free to comment on our Facebook page and add any we've missed. Be sure, too, to send us photos of you and your family at any of these events.

Friday, May 27 to Sunday, May 29: Putnam County Joint Veterans Council John Morris Memorial Watchfire Vigil: Opening ceremony is Friday at 7 p.m. Flag Retirement through out the Vigil.

Sunday, May 29: VFW Post 1374 & Auxiliary, Carmel and American Legion Post 270 offer a 9 a.m. ceremony at monument on Terryhill Road, Kent; 11:30 a.m. ceremony at Post Home, 32 Gleneida Ave, Carmel, with refreshments to follow.

Monday, May 30

  • VFW Post 391, Putnam Valley: 11 a.m. ceremony Putnam Valley Town Hall; ceremony also at noon at 1Lake Peekskill Monument (Chester Place). At at 1 p.m. at Ceremony Post Home 153 Oscawanna Lake Road; refreshments to follow. The Start of “Round of Honor” begins at 2 p.m. visiting gravesites, cemeteries, and monuments in vicinity, including Lakeland High School, Bill Mangero Park.
  • At 11 a.m the parade starts in Brewster courtesy of FW Post 672 from Brewster Fire House to Electrozone Field; ceremony at Electrozone Field following parade with a light lunch at post home on Peaceable Hill Road.
  • VFW Post & Ladies Auxiliary 5491 Mahopac and American Legion Post 1080 are behind the parade from Clarke Place to Veterans Memorial Park on East Lake Blvd; Step off is at 10 a.m. with a ceremony to follow at Monument.
  • American Legion Post 1080 Ceremony at noon following VFW ceremony at 333 Buckshollow Road at VFW Post home, 154 East Lake Blvd
  • VFW Post 9257& Ladies Auxiliary & AMVET Post 1111 Putnam Lake: Parade from Castle Restaurant to Veterans Monument on Haviland Road (step off 10 am.); ceremony to follow parade at monument.
  • VFW Post 8013, Somers: Annual Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance Ceremony. Step off 10 a.m. from Somers Middle School to Ivandell Cemetery. Refreshments at Somers Town House following the ceremony. (Somers is included because the Somers VFW recently joined the Putnam County Council VFW.) 
  • American Legion Post 1542, Patterson features a 10 a.m. walk from Post home to monument on Rt. 311 for ceremony. Refreshments to follow at Post Home.
