Cafe Piccolo Pastry, Bagels A Longtime Mahopac Favorite

MAHOPAC, N.Y. -- Cafe Piccolo in Mahopac is one of those kinds of places where everyone knows everyone's name, the coffee is perfect and the smell of luscious pastries and other goodies hits when you walk in the door.

"It's like Cheers," said employee Eileen Paganelli, who has worked at the cafe for more than 10 years. "We know what kind of coffee people want and likely what they will order."

Open for some 20 years, Cafe Piccolo makes dozens of fresh pastries, cannoli's, cakes, muffins, cookies and their premium favorite -- several kinds of melt-in-your-mouth coffee cakes each day.

"The melt-away is the favorite, but all of the varieties are pretty popular," Paganelli said.

Special occasion cakes are also a big favorite among customers, along with their strong Italian coffees, she added.

But if you don't want something sweet, patrons can also grab a number of different sandwiches.

Paganelli's favorite is the cannoli: "It's delicious, and lots of others think so too," she laughs.

The shop is usually busy, but with the holiday upon them, special orders for cakes and special events have bakers and cooks hopping.

"Come in and have a coffee and something sweet," Paganelli said. "This is a great place."

Cafe Piccolo is located at 2 Mahopac Plaza. Call 845-628-2233. Hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
