"I was just looking for a fun, catchy name," owner Andrew Wiktor told Daily Voice. He said he was tossing ideas around with friends and "Goodfellas just kind of popped out."
Delis are Italian, and he loves the movie of the same name, so it seemed like a perfect fit.
The menu choices also reflect the theme. "I had fun with it and named them for mafia characters throughout history, both real and fictional." Wiktor said.
Two of the current customer favorites are the Vladimir Putin and the Fat Tony, both sandwiches. The former is a chicken cutlet and bacon, Muenster cheese, and Russian dressing. The latter is also a chicken cutlet, but it's paired with prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, lettuce and tomato, and oil and vinegar.
In addition to the lengthy menu, the shop also features a deli, stocked with freshly-made homemade salads and more, and a grab-and-go cooler, with its desserts, wraps and other items.
Goodfellas also sports an extensive catering menu, which includes appetizer trays, salads, pasta trays, sandwiches by the foot and more. You can also order online, for either pickup or delivery, and even for a future date.
Wiktor said he had worked for pizzerias and delis when he was younger. "I was just looking for a new opportunity," he said. "I figured I'd take a chance. What's life, without taking chances?"
He opened the shop last September. "It's been nice," Wiktor said. "We've been keeping busy. The people are very nice, and the food has been well-received."
There aren't a ton of reviews on the internet yet -- but every single one is positive.
"Everything is absolutely delicious," said Yelp user Rita R. back in February. "They have hot foods, all different kinds of heroes on the best Italian bread, pizza and desserts.
"This is now my favorite lunch spot," she added. "Try it, you'll keep coming back for more."
Wiktor added that one more motivation, in opening his own place, was emphasizing the importance of shopping small: "I want people to appreciate what a local restaurant offers, instead of chains."
The restaurant is located at 716 Route 6, in Mahopac. It's open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday through Saturday, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
