Northern Westchester Hospital Psychiatrist Talks 'Permissive Parenting'

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- An increasing number of parents are opting for what experts refer to as 'permissive parenting' according to a recent article in Westchester Magazine.

Dr. Alexander Lerman, a psychologist at Northern Westchester Hospital, explains how parenting styles have changed for 21st century teens.

"The rate of drug use among Westchester teenagers, by the time they are seniors in college, is 50 percent. For parents, it’s challenging to know what to do,” Lerman said of the situation. 

Some parents elect to remain "hip" and turn a blind eye to underage drinking and drug use, while others adopt a more authoritative zero-tolerance policy, he said. To learn more about what area parents are saying, a link to the full article can be found here.
