Cole Caulfield, outcomes analyst at Putnam Hospital Center, sure has. The Putnam Valley resident has Dr. Paul Cathcart, a vascular surgeon on the medical staff at Putnam Hospital Center, to thank for saving his life.

Several years ago, Caulfield went to the Emergency Department with complaints of chest pain and difficulty breathing.

“Dr. Cathcart identified on an X-ray that I had a tension pneumothorax," he said. "My entire right lung had collapsed as well as most of my other lung. My organs were also pressing on my heart. He immediately used an emergency chest tube to re-inflate my lung.”

Caulfield awoke to Dr. Cathcart giving him a big smile.

“He spent so much time with me during my stay – we even traded video games!” said Caulfield.

To this day, they both find time to chat at the hospital.

Added Caulfield: “We often discuss how I’m doing. He is truly one of the nicest doctors I’ve ever had,."
