PAWLING, N.Y. -- Rosé, sometimes called "the nectar of summer" or "summer water" by wine experts, is beginning its seasonal rise in popularity as the weather begins to heats up.
"Rosé is the summer's most popular wine because it's simple in the glass, has a great taste and is extremely versatile," said Louie Ingles, manager of Wineology of Pawling. "While many people think of a sweet taste when it comes to rosé, there is actually much more to the wine than people think."
According to Ingles, rosé is made from red grapes using the skin-contact method, which allows the skin to remain in contact with the juice for two to three days. Unlike red wine, the skin is then discarded during the draining process, resulting in various shades of pink, depending on how long the skin was left in contact with the juice.
"Rosé has a very short amount of skin contact, which is why it turns a translucent shade of pink -- think cotton candy to watermelon," said Ingles.
Another common misconception about rosé, he says, is its taste. While many wine drinkers envision a sweet taste, rosé varieties can range from dry and fruity to light and refreshing. "Rosé is dry and crisp but not too sweet, so it appeals to both sides of the spectrum," said Ingles. "It gives a sense of refreshment whenever people drink it, whether they're at a barbecue or a picnic."
Rosé is best served chilled, which is why people often enjoy it during the summer months. Both delicious and increasingly popular, rosé sales at Wineology doubled in 2016 and Ingles plans to have 25 different rosé selections to keep up with demand in 2017.
"When the warmer weather comes around, there is no occasion that wouldn't be improved by a good rosé," said Ingles.
