Open House At Putnam Valley Facility Shows Parents Camp Adventures

PUTNAM VALLEY, N.Y. -- There are approximately 11,000 children in the child welfare system or foster care in New York. Since 2006, The New York Foundling and The Felix Organization have given the gift of Camp Felix, a sleepaway camp in Putnam Valley, to over 1,000 of these children.

Wednesday night, foster, adoptive, and biological parents of Camp Felix campers were invited to an open house to see firsthand what the camp offers while enjoying a BBQ dinner and camper talent show.

Designed to meet the needs of kids who have experienced abuse, neglect, and trauma at a young age, Camp Felix is specially structured to nurture these children and inject support and structure into daily life.

Many of these children have never roasted s’mores over a bonfire or hiked through the forest, and their lives are far from the carefree environment that Camp Felix offers them each summer.

Guests at the open house heard about the activities that campers enjoy throughout their time at Camp Felix and learned how The New York Foundling and The Felix Organization are providing an outlet for these disadvantaged children to share the priceless camp experiences that are often taken for granted.

Camp Felix is the only overnight camp for children in the child welfare system near the New York City area that is operated by a child welfare agency at no cost to foster parents and caregivers. It is run by The New York Foundling, one of New York City’s oldest and largest nonprofits serving disadvantaged children and families, and the Felix Organization.
