Born in the Bronx and raised in Mamaroneck, Bambino said the desire to help people led him to a career in law enforcement.
Bambino started working in 1986 with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office as a correction officer at the county jail. He was promoted to deputy sheriff in 1987.
He remained as a deputy sheriff until 2002, working mostly in Southeast and Carmel.
“You handle just about everything and anything,” Bambino said. “You make arrests – felonies, misdemeanors, traffic accidents, domestic disputes.”
Bambino retired as a senior investigator and supervisor in November and was soon working at the hospital.
It was a long interview process, but thanks to his contacts with police and first responders, and his experience with the sheriff’s office, he got the job.
As the hospital’s manager of security, Bambino is responsible for the safety of visitors, patients, and staff.
He also trains staff on what to do in a major emergency, such as if there is an active shooter in the hospital.
“Everyone has to be more observant,” he said. “It’s true that when you see something, say something. If you feel that someone doesn’t belong, or that they’re someone suspicious, there’s nothing wrong with calling security."
Bambino said his ultimate goal is to keep everyone safe.
