Deer Ticks In New York Can Transmit Deadly Virus

PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. -- With warm weather spreading across Putnam County and the Hudson Valley, the concern about tick-borne diseases is growing, including a new virus that could prove to be deadly, according to LoHud.com.

The Powassan virus infects the central nervous system and can cause encephalitis and meningitis. Possible symptoms include: fever, vomiting, confusion and seizures. In some cases, symptoms never arise, LoHud.com reported.

Cases have been reported in several states, including New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Seventeen cases have been reported in New York between 2004 and 2013, according to the Center of Disease Control.

Authorities said the major difference with the Powassan virus and other tick-borne infections is it's faster rate of transfer. It is said to be fatal in about 10 percent of cases, LoHud.com said.
