The notice is the lowest of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s four emergency classification levels. It followed an electrical fault on a cable that carries electricity between both operating units at the site, the release said.
A small fire on the cable self-extinguished moments after the fault occurred. There was no impact on plant operations and there were no injuries as a result of the event.
Both plants continue to operate at full power. An investigation is underway into the cause of the electrical fault.
Indian Point Energy Center is home to two operating nuclear power plants, units 2 and 3, which generate about 2,000 megawatts of electricity and supply about 25 percent of the power used annually by homes, business and public facilities in New York City and Westchester County.
