PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. – Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith and other officials are being sued for $45 million by a man who claims he was charged with rape as part of a political fracus, according to a report by lohud.com.
Alexandru Hossu, 38, was a live-in trainer for Adam Levy, then the Putnam County district attorney, according to multiple media reports. Levy is the son of Judge Judith Sheindlin, television's "Judge Judy."
Hossu, a Romanian immigrant who had been charged with assaulting his former lover’s teenage daughter, was acquitted in 2014, media reports said.
Hossu’s federal lawsuit -- which also targets the county, several senior officials in Smith’s office, and two Westchester County prosecutors – alleges that they knew the rape charge was baseless but pursued it anyway because of his relationship to Levy, the lohud.com article said.
The suit’s claim of a political bloodfeud is based on, it said, Levy’s open opposition to Smith’s re-election bid in 2013, according to lohud.com.
Levy himself lost his bid for re-election as the county's top prosecutor in 2015, lohud.com said.
