The Times Union of Albany reported that the FBI is looking into the administration’s hiring of political appointees and then spreading their salaries across other state agencies to keep the Executive Chamber's budget balanced.

The report says that in recent months, FBI agents have interviewed several employees from Cuomo’s office who are paid through other agencies. This practice has reportedly been routine for governors for decades.

“In this environment, anyone can ask about anything, but the fact is the longstanding practice of detailing staff from agencies to work in the Executive Chamber dates back over 50 years to at least the Rockefeller administration and extends to the White House and the federal Department of Justice," Cuomo spokesperson Rich Azzopardi said in a statement, calling the FBI’s line of questioning “absurd.”
