Get Your Wag On, Putnam: Friday Is National Dog Day

CARMEL, N.Y. -- Putnam Human Society reminds folks that Friday is National Dog Day, time to celebrate and honor what dogs do -- and perhaps adopt one, if you don't yet have a canine in your life.

Friday -- and every Aug. 26 -- is National Dog Day.

"Who loves you unconditionally? Who is the happiest when you arrive home? Who doesn’t care what you look like in the morning? Who makes you laugh when you feel like crying?" the shelter asks. "Your dog!"

National Dog Day is celebrated on Aug. 26 each year, and it was founded in 2004. Besides drawing attention to the many dogs in need of rescue each year, the day honors both family dogs and those that do critical work -- whether in law enforcement or rescue situations, or assisting folks with disabilities.

The official site lists 20 different ways to celebrate, besides adopting, including:

  • Volunteering at a local shelter.
  • Donating food, blankets or toys.
  • Hosting a National Dog Day party, inviting your friends and their canine companions -- and perhaps even creating some "pupcakes," if you're feeling frisky.
  • Walking the dog of an elderly or ill neighbor.
  • Buy your dog a new toy, collar or leash.
