Historic Speaker Series Returns To Putnam Valley With Custer Discussion

PUTNAM VALLEY, N.Y. -- The Putnam Valley Historical Society announces a new season of “Our American History – A Free Program Series,” at 10 a.m. on Oct. 10 at Putnam Valley Grange Hall, 128 Mill St., Putnam Valley.

George Armstrong Custer will be the topic of the presentation

Capt. Mark Ehlers, assistant professor of History at West Point, will discuss “George Armstrong Custer: Before the Little Bighorn.” 

Ehlers received his commission as an armor officer through ROTC at James Madison University in 2005. Upon graduation, he served as a light cavalry scout platoon leader in the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment at Fort Riley, Kan. He deployed to Baghdad in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2007-2008. Ehlers’ historical interests include the American Civil War, antebellum American cultural history and Modern and early modern Britain.
