The formal holiday was first observed in Nebraska City, Nebraska, in 1872. Arbor Day is currently celebrated on the last Friday in April, the foundation said.

Shortly after the first 1872 observance, other states passed legislation to observe Arbor Day each year with appropriate ceremonies. By 1920, more than 45 states and territorial possessions were celebrating Arbor Day. Today, Arbor Day is celebrated in all 50 states, the Arbor Foundation said.
