Newburgh Residents Warned Of Water Contamination

NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- Newburgh's City Manager Michael Ciaravino declared a state of emergency on Monday after high levels of a contaminant were discovered in the drinking water source, said Time Warner Cable News.

Residents are being warned that contaminants have been found in Lake Washington.

Ciaravino said the city switched from using Lake Washington water to Brown's Pond and the Catskills Aqueduct after high levels of the pollutant known as PFOS were discovered during testing in Silver Stream and the lake, said TWC News.

While the amount of contaminants found are considered below the federal cutoff levels, Ciaravino added that under new EPA rules coming into effect soon, Newburgh's levels would not pass inspection. The pollutant is can be found in cleaning products among other things, added TWC News.
