Putnam CTC Uses Outdoor Signs As Prevention Tool

CARMEL, N.Y. -- While stopped at a light on Route 52 in Carmel, a mother of two teens noticed a message running on the digital board in front of the Carmel Fire House. It says "Family Meals -- A Great Time to Connect."

The Putnam CTC Coalition is using local signs to pass on messages about strengthening families and substance abuse.

It made her think for a moment about that fact and "that is exactly what these prevention messages are supposed to do," says Bruce Kelly, coalition coordinator for the Putnam Communities that Care Coalition.

Communication is the key to a healthy relationship with your children, Kelly says, and this message will hopefully spur conversations which can help families explore the many issues teens face. Using these signs is one way to get information out to the community on issues that affect them.

As folks drive throughout Putnam County this summer, they'll see these messages popping up in Carmel, Putnam Valley, Brewster and Patterson. Whether they're on town hall outdoor bulletins, local fire departments' signs or on a schools' digital board, they're the work of the local substance abuse prevention committees, which are part of the larger Putnam CTC Coalition.

The coalition's goal is to help build a safe and healthy family-oriented community. For more information on the group, visit its Facebook page or website.
