"Sept. 11, 2001, will always remain in our memories. Where we were, what we were doing and who we were with. On that day members from our department, located just 60 miles north of New York City, would make the journey down to help in the relief efforts," said Vincent Fanelli, assistant chief of the Putnam Lake Fire Department. "That day we have lost family members and many friends."

On April 24, the department members will be running and walking in their honor to raise money, which will go toward the 9/11 Memorial, located where the two towers once stood, he said.

"We will never forget and must make sure that no one else does," added Fanelli.

The department has set up a sign-up and donation page for members of the community who would like to take part or donate money. To date, firefighters have raised $35.
