Students in Putnam will be heading back to school this week, with most schools opening the 2015-2016 school year on Sept. 2 or Sept. 3.

Putnam Valley Superintendent Dr. Fran Wills said she is very excited for the start of the school year.

Sandra Intrieri is the new high school principal, while another kindergarten section was added at the elementary school.

"We have a good year in store," Wills said. "We're looking forward to a banner year in Putnam Valley."

Wills said the school district recently held a retreat with the board to discuss goals and build a relationship between the board and administration.

The superintendent said she most looks forward to meeting the incoming kindergartners.

"I love watching them get on the bus for the first time," Wills said. "We want to be part of that first experience."

Wills said she has high academic expectations and wants to move the district forward.

"I am looking to ensure our high school programs are successful," Wills said.

Carol Dweck's book, "Mindset," has become a must read for students at Putnam Valley, particularly the incoming freshmen.

"There's so much good information on how we can encourage students to take on challenges, persevere and set goals," Wills said.

Wills also wants ninth-graders to read "The Seven Habits of Highly Successful Teens."

"We want them to develop a plan and put our 9th graders in the best possible position to succeed," Wills said.

Lakeland spent the summer under construction as part of Phase 1 of its safety and security bond.

George Washington Elementary and Lakeland Copper Beach Middle School were repaved and the track at Lakeland High school was resurfaced.

All entrances now have security windows and security vestibules, along security lock sets in all classrooms.

About 20 new teachers have joined the Lakeland School District.
