PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. -- Children who grow up in Putnam County stand a better chance of swifter upward mobility than any surrounding counties, according to a story in the New York Times.

Children up grow up in Putnam instead of an average place would make 12 percent more in income by age 26, the story said. The difference in income is $3,080.

By comparison, children who grow up in Westchester County would make $600 less, or 2 percent, than children who were raised in average communities. Rockland was 2 percent less, Orange was 9 percent less and Dutchess was 1 percent less. Fairfield County children make 8 percent less than an average place.
