DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. - Some Dutchess County residents have been duped by fraudsters running a scam and overcharging for information that is readily available to them.

The East Fishkill Police Department issued an alert to residents after several homeowners reported that they had received mailings called a “recorded deed notice.”

Police said that the letters homeowners have received led them to believe that they need to have a current Grand Deed and Property Assessment profile, though the information they are providing is already available for a small fee from the Dutchess County Clerk. The scammers are asking residents to pay upwards of $100 for that information.

According to police, “since the letter does offer a service and no one has yet to report being bilked by this company, we cannot truly say it is Illegal. However, the price they quote for doing something people can do for themselves is rather excessive.”

Police said that anyone who may have received these notices should review the information with family and friends to determine if the information is needed.
