Shoplifting Arrest Made At Carmel Supermarket

CARMEL, N.Y. – A Dutchess County man was placed under arrest at Hannaford Supermarket in Carmel by Putnam Deputy Sheriff Andrew Kristan on Tuesday, Sept. 16, and is now facing charges of petit larceny.

Kristan responded to a report that a shoplifter was being held by security at around 12:53 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Hannaford at the Putnam Plaza on Route 6. Roger G. Birch, 29, of Hopewell Junction had allegedly taken some merchandise and left the store without paying for it.

Kristan arrested Birch, and filed the charge, which is a misdemeanor. The defendant was processed at the Putnam County Correctional Facility, where he then awaited arraignment. A guilty verdict could mean as much as a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
