Smith will pay Levy $150,000, with $125,000 coming from the county and $25,000 personally coming from him after he admitted to making false statements about Levy interfering in a rape case. Smith publicly retracted and apologized for his statements.
Lawmakers admitted they did not like the idea of using taxpayer funds, but attorneys had advised them this was in the county's best interest, according to The Examiner. A trial could've resulted in more taxpayer money being doled out.
Levy sued Smith after Smith said Levy publicly interfered in his investigation of Levy's personal trainer Alexander Hossu for raping a 13-year-old girl.
Hossu was later charged and acquitted. Smith also said Hossu lived with Levy and that Levy should be investigated for harboring an illegal alien.
