Taconic State Parkway Stretch In Putnam County Is A Very Rough Ride

CARMEL, N.Y. -- Putnam County roadways, for the most part, are relatively pothole-free.

But brace yourself for a very rough ride on the Taconic State Parkway when crossing through Putnam County -- in either direction.

The surface of the parkway is pitted, uneven and has degraded significantly during the past month between Route 6 near the Shrub Oak/Mahopac exit all the way north past Fahnestock State Park in Carmel, right up to Putnam's border with Dutchess County near Interstate 84.

State Department of Transportation crews weren't working on the Taconic's bumpy pavement on Friday afternoon, however. They were busy shutting down a northbound lane of the Taconic to clear trees and shrubs just south of Route 301 in Carmel. The state plans to expand the parkway shoulder in that area, according to Gina DiSarro, a regional DOT spokeswoman.

Another state crew closed one lane of the Taconic Parkway southbound near Knapp Road on Friday to repair guardrails.

DiSarro said a state pothole crew was out working along the Taconic on Thursday.

DiSarro said pavement repairs required throughout Putnam County necessitate more than just filling potholes. She said the state also has responsibility for repairing Interstate 84.

In Westchester County, state transportation crews were busy shutting down two of three lanes of Interstate 684 northbound, near Exit 3 (Bedford/Armonk), to fill potholes. On Friday, stop-and-go lunch-hour traffic was backed up on I-684 south to the Westchester County Airport in Purchase due to the state's ongoing pothole repair work.
