Poughkeepsie Murder Victim Remembered As Family Man, Athletic Standout

Nakia Bruton 42, of Poughkeepsie, died on Thursday, Sept. 14, after being stabbed by his girlfriend on Winnikee Avenue.

Born on Nov. 24, 1974, in Poughkeepsie, Bruton was the son of Gwen Pearson and the late Willie Bruton.

The father of four children, Bruton's life was centered on spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed playing all sports, but he excelled in soccer. 

After graduating from Poughkeepsie High School in 1992, he attended Cazenovia College where he earned his Associate Degree in liberal arts. Bruton also enjoyed cooking, he worked at Benny's 10th Inning for many years and continued to work in the cooking industry.

He is survived by his mother, Gwen Pearson, three sons, Nakya Bruton and his mother (Polly Joyner), Namar, Nakia, and one daughter Markia; two sisters, Jeannie Pearson and Tina Bruton Rimpinen; aunts, Lorraine Larry and Ella Tillery; uncles, Levurtus Larry (Jennifer), Joe Hutchinson (Sharon) and Sam Thomas (Cindy); one special cousin, Cupid, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, and his extended family the Turners, Benny, and Sheri.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Wilford Hutchinson Sr. and Mellinee Larry Hutchinson, and Molly Lassiter.

A viewing will be held 10-11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, at Beulah Baptist Church, 92 Catharine St., Poughkeepsie. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. at the church. 

The Rev. Jesse V. Bottoms Jr. will officiate. Professional service entrusted to Rhodes Funeral Home, 43 Fairview Ave., Poughkeepsie.
