Leather, who assumed his current position on Jan. 1, commented on his tenure so far, saying it's been "fine." He added that there is a "great group of officers" and that he is looking forward to moving the department forward.

Serving as fire chief is just the latest move for Leather. A 20-year veteran of the fire department, he previously served as 1st Assistant Chief and as 2nd Assistant Chief.

Leather took over the chief's position from Bill Rieg.

Chiefs serve for one-year terms, and can do so for up to two consecutive terms. Brewster firefighters can serve up to six concurrent years in the various positions.

Leather also grew up in the Brewster area and graduated from Brewster High School. He is currently a resident of Patterson and works in Southeast.

Service in the fire department is open to people who live or work in the fire district, Leather explained.

The fire district covers the Village of Brewster and the Town of Southeast.

Leather, who would like for there to be more volunteers, discussed how people can apply. This includes filling out a PDF form, which is available on the fire department's website.

Leather also hopes to make available a live application form, which he would like to have ready later this year.
