Lt. John McGinty, of the New York City Fire Department’s Ladder Company 33, was chosen by the FDNY’s Board of Merit to receive the Uniformed Officers Association Medal for rescuing an unconscious woman from a burning building last April.

The award was presented Wednesday by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

According to the association, McGinty’s company responded April 8, 2015, to an early morning fire at a six-story building in the Yorkville section of Manhattan.

He and his team were met by an elderly man who told them a woman was trapped on the second floor.

The firefighters had to battle through severe smoke conditions to reach the burning apartment, where they found the woman on the kitchen floor.

After he and firefighter Harry Callahan got the woman out safely, McGinty returned to the apartment’s front door as flames rolled overhead, the NYPD said.

He used an extinguisher to hold back the fire long enough for another hose to be bought in, officials said.

Once flames were beaten back, he and his team re-entered the apartment for a second search, the NYPD said.

In a message to the annual Medal Day recipients and participants, de Blasio said the FDNY had responded to a “record-breaking 1.7 million emergencies” across the five boroughs in 2015.

Crediting the leadership of FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro, the mayor wrote “these dedicated men and women responded efficiently and effectively to any situation that arose, risked their own safety, and put themselves in harm’s way.”

The city was, de Blasio said, “incredibly grateful for their courage.”

McGinty and his wife, Trudy, have two sons, Connor and Brian.
