Man Charged With Boating While Intoxicated In Lake Mahopac

CARMEL, N.Y. -- A Putnam County Sheriff’s officer has charged a 25-year-old Yorktown man with operating a watercraft while under the influence of alcohol after an incident on Lake Mahopac, authorities said.

The arrest came about when a deputy on marine patrol responded to the report of a sinking boat on the lake on Labor Day at 4:18 p.m., according to officials.

Upon arrival, Sgt. Michael Szabo observed several jet ski operators in the process of rescuing the three passengers of the boat, which sank to the bottom of the lake, police report.

Back on shore, Szabo observed that the boat's driver, identified as Michael E. Ahearn, exhibited signs of intoxication, according to officials.

Ahearn admitted that he had been drinking prior to the incident, and Szabo arrested him, police report.

The suspect was charged with operating a vessel while ability impaired by alcohol in the second degree, a misdemeanor, after failing a series of standardized field sobriety tests, according to officials.

Ahearn was processed at the Putnam County Correctional Facility, and held pending arraignment, police report.

If found guilty of the charge, the defendant could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
