Richard Hofmeister, 46, was charged with aggravated DWI when Officer Corey Ashe found Hofmeister's car on Mooney Hill  Road after crashing into a bridge. Both the car and the bridge had received extensive damage from the crash, said police.

When Ashe walked up to the car, Hofmeister was still in the driver's seat and exhibited signs of intoxication and was given a variety of field sobriety tests, which he failed, police said.

An additional blood alcohol content test showed he was driving at more than two times the legal limit at .20 percent, Ashe said.

Hofmeister was released on his own recognizance and is due to appear in court at a later date.
