On Thursday, New York State Police announced that Joseph Strang and Suheer Mazhar, both 17, were now facing felony third-degree grand larceny charges after being arrested last month for stealing from a business in LaGrange.
According to police, on Feb. 23, troopers were contacted by a manager at the business, who reported that an employee had stolen approximately $200 from the store’s cash register. Utilizing surveillance footage, an employee was seen entering sales into the cash register and later canceling the sales, enabling both teens to share the proceeds of the scam.
The subsequent investigation revealed that both Strang and Mazhar had been canceling sales for months, allowing them to steal money from the business dating back to last October. Police arrested both that day and charged them with fourth-degree grand larceny.
Since their arrests, the business has reviewed documentation from the canceled sales and fictitious returns, determining that they had stolen more than $14,000 over five months. Earlier this month, their charge was upgraded to third-degree larceny. On Thursday, state police announced that they were also being charged with a felony count first-degree falsifying business records.
State police said both suspects are due to appear in the Town of LaGrange Court later this year.
