MAHOPAC, N.Y. --  Speed caused an accident Thursday that led to two 17-year-old Mahopac girls being saved from drowning by another teen who witnessed the accident from his driveway, according to the Carmel Police Department.

The accident occurred when the driver of the Toyota Matrix lost control of the car while traveling at a high rate of speed on North Lake Boulevard in the area of Mahopac Woods Beach, said Lt. John Dearman.

"The female lost control of the vehicle which crossed completely over the roadway, crashing through a telephone pole then driving over a dock before coming to rest on its roof in Lake Mahopac," he said.

Luckily for the girls, 19-year-old Cullen Malzo heard the accident from his house on North Lake Boulevard and could see the vehicle in the water from his driveway, police said.

He dialed 911 from his cell phone and then proceeded to jump into the lake in an effort to rescue the occupants, police said.

The car was in approximately 3- to 4-feet of water and mud. Malzo was able to reach in through a window that had been broken out during the crash and pull the driver and another passenger out of the vehicle, Dearman added.

Both occupants were transported to Westchester Medical Center by Mahopac Ambulance for evaluation. There were no signs of drug or alcohol involvement in the accident, Dearman said.
