The arrests came about when an officer patrolling the Jefferson Valley Mall parking lot observed the man allegedly handing a hypodermic syringe to the woman as they sat inside a parked vehicle on Tuesday, Aug, 2, around 6:42 p.m., police report.
The officer conducted an investigation at the scene, according to officials.
The suspects, identified as Eric Lopata and Candace L. Moran, were allegedly in possession of a hypodermic instrument and heroin, police report.
They were placed under arrest and taken to the Yorktown Police Department for processing, according to officials.
Lopata and Moran have each been charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, along with criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument, both class A misdemeanors, police report.
The defendants were issued appearance tickets and released on their own recognizance, according to officials.
They are scheduled to appear in Yorktown Justice Court on Tuesday, Sept. 6, police report.
