Woman Charged In Shoplifting Incident At Hannaford Supermarket In Carmel

CARMEL, N.Y. -- A Putnam County Sheriff’s deputy has arrested a 45-year-old resident of the Town of Southeast on a larceny charge.

A deputy responded to a report of a shoplifter who had been taken into custody by the loss prevention officer at the Hannaford Supermarket at 1936 Route 6 in Carmel on Sunday, March 6, at 11:55 a.m., police report.

The loss prevention officer had observed the suspect, identified as Katarzyna A. Pawlus-Szewczyk, conceal items of merchandise and exit the store without paying for them, according to officials.

The deputy arrested Pawlus-Szewczyk and charged her with petty larceny, a misdemeanor, police report.

The defendant was processed at the Putnam County Correctional Facility and released, pending an appearance in the Town of Carmel Justice Court to answer the charge on Tuesday, March 22, officials report.

If found guilty of the charge, Pawlus-Szewczyk could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
