PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Putnam County Sheriff’s Department has charged a 24-year-old resident of Dutchess County with driving without a valid licence and possession of marijuana, police said.

The arrest came about when Deputy Sheriff William Quick stopped a motorist who had committed a traffic violation on Route 9 in the Town of Philipstown on Wednesday, Oct. 19, around 2:34 p.m., according to police.

Upon approach, the deputy detected the odor of marijuana emanating from the interior of the vehicle, police said.

After investigating, Smith determined that the driver, identified as Brittany L. Besze of Rhinebeck, was in possession of a quantity of marijuana and held a suspended license, according to police.

The suspect was arrested and processed at the scene; she has been charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree, a misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation, police said.

After processing, Besze was released on her own recognizance, according to police.

She is scheduled to appear in the Town of Philipstown Justice Court to answer the charges on Monday, Nov.28, police said.

If found guilty of the misdemeanor charge, the defendant could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
