PUTNAM VALLEY, N.Y. -- The Putnam Daily Voice accepts signed and original letters to the editor up to 350 words. To submit a letter, e-mail putnam@dailyvoice.com .

Republican Kevin Byrne and Democrat Brian Higbie are vying for New York's 94th District seat. Current Assemblyman Steve Katz is not seeking re-election.

To the editor:

I can't even recall how long I have known Kevin Byrne and watched him mature. But for as long as I have known him -- as a member of an ambulance corps, a volunteer fire department, a musician, a member of a volunteer government board, the American Red Cross -- his commitment to his community has been the most significant element of his character.

Kevin is not a politician. But he has been in the public arena for long enough to know how government works and how to negotiate the political dialogue that must happen for anything to be achieved.

Kevin won't merely hew to a party line. He's his own man, and I trust him to make intelligent decisions, based on common sense and our best interests.
