The small town is located in the Hudson Highlands, less than an hour from midtown Manhattan by car or train. Its signature feature is the series of lakes located throughout the community which provide breathtaking views and inviting outdoor activities. Local residents often refer to Putnam Valley as the "Town of Lakes". The most notable is Lake Oscawana, which is the largest and the only one that allows motor boats in the area.

The vast amount of open space in Putnam Valley is well worth a drive just over the Westchester County border.
