The Manhattanville College doctoral program in educational leadership, run with BOCES, has a already graduated 23 students, and 100 more are currently pursuing their degrees.

About 40 teachers and scholars attended an event to celebrate the accomplishments and welcome 15 new doctoral students accepted into the fall program.

The rigorous three-year doctoral program offers problem-based learning with coursework, field experiences and applied research for midcareer educators, said a news release.

Since its inception in June 2010, the PNW BOCES and Manhattanville partnership has continued to meet the needs of the field, said Renee Gargano, assistant coordinator of the doctoral program.

A new initiative is the Higher Educational Leadership concentration, designed for leaders in education to further develop their skills in helping shape educational institutions in the future.

The event also celebrated the start of a third cohort of participants in the Executive Ed. D. program, for doctoral students who have completed all doctoral requirements but the dissertation. Eight students enrolled in this program as Cohort III.

“Your acceptance into the doctoral program is no small feat,” Gargano told the group of educators. “We have very rigorous admissions criteria, and our highs standards assure that your doctoral program will be rich and life-changing.”

Yiping Wan, professor and the coordinator of the doctoral program in educational leadership, gave participants a taste of things to come. He told them that he expects participants to rewrite their thesis at least 30 times.

“Perseverance is very important. A doctorate is not easy. It is something you have to earn.”
