Bob’s Diner, 27 Main St., Brewster, (845) 278-2478

Been Around Since: 1955.

Known For: Said to be hands-down the best breakfast spot in the area. Serves American food cooked the old-fashioned way and has won such a loyal following that folks snap up its pancakes, sausages, and crispy home fries like they were about to be made illegal. Old-fashioned malteds and coffee also shine.

Behind the Scenes: Community oriented to the max, Bob's has been run by the same family, the Sprague's, since the eponymous Bob opened the little red eatery in the 1950’s. It goes above and beyond with family events, such as its annual pumpkin-carving contest. And it’s not without romance, one young eloping couple, who stopped there to eat more than 50 years ago (the bride also called her mom from Bob’s to tell her she had gotten married), are still enjoying its hash browns and blue plate specials. The diner recently celebrated its 60th year of business.
