Corned Beef, Cabbage Keep Irish Eyes Smiling At Putnam Eateries

PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. -- The luck of the Irish runs deep in Putnam where, in true Celtic fashion, the Guinness pours dark, rich and slowly, Irish coffees come piping hot and piles of corned beef arrive at your table with heaping portions of cabbage.

The St. Patrick's Day season technically begins March 8 after the Mahopac parade and continues through March 17. Here's a sampling of area celebrations.

Fiddler's Green, Carmel: Expect green beer, bagpipers, Irish step dancers and lots of homemade potato salad and corned beef at this popular Irish pub where, come late at night on parade day, some folks have been known to come out with their kilts. Live music can be heard March 8, 15 and 17 with each day offering its own special celebration. Go Green: 1870 US-6, (845) 225-9825.

Healey's Corner, Carmel: Owner Ryan Healy has up to 100 pounds of corned beef at the ready for what he calls the three main party days, March 8, 15 and 17. Enjoy bangers and mash, fish and chips, beef stew and lots of Guinness March 8. On March 15, it's a family-oriented St. Patrick's Day with the restaurant's third annual Irish breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon complete with French toast made with homemade Irish soda bread, step dancers and bagpipers. (FYI: You can buy the Irish soda bread to go by either ordering ahead or walking in and asking for that day.) On March 17, there will be lots of food, drinks and live viewing of the NYC parade on seven HDTVs. Go Green: 474 Route 52, (845) 306-7087.

Kelly's Corner, Brewster: Get your fill of corned beef and cabbage, along with homemade Irish soda bread, March 17 at this homey spot where owner Kelly Quinn promises lots of Irish coffees and pints full of Guinness. The bar also hosts dance performances by the Kelly Oster School of Dance at 5 and 7 p.m. so everyone can get into the true Emerald Isle spirit. "We just move the tables and chairs around and have a great time," he said. Go Green: 1625 NY 22, (845) 278-4297.
