The Freight House Café, Mahopac
What Makes It "Strong": This kitschy and cute café occupies a circa 1872 building that served freight and passengers for the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad for 50 years. Now it serves homemade breakfast, lunch, and some of the best coffee in town, say customers.
It was, in fact, a 2016 DVlicious winner for "Best Coffee in Putnam."
Freight gets its coffee beans and blends from Bear Mountain Coffee Roasters, a local business owned by Jonathan Baratz of Yorktown. Among the ever-changing line-up of popular brews are “Truly Scrumptious,” which tastes like cinnamon and graham crackers and has a creamy and nutty finish; “Angel’s Kiss,” a concoction of chocolate, coconut, and cinnamon; and Sumatra Blue, an organic, full-bodied dark roast that some call “karma in a cup.” Freight also has its own house blend and offers cappuccinos, lattes and chai. It also has live music on Saturday nights.
