There have been no reports of illness associated with the tuna products to date, Bumble Bee said.
Bumble Bee cited “process deviations” that occurred in a co-pack facility that it said it did not own or operate.
These deviations, it said, were part of the commercial sterilization process and could cause contamination by spoilage organisms or pathogens.
Consuming the tuna could lead to life-threatening illnesses, the company said.
Bumble Bee said the recall was being initiated out of "an abundance of caution" due to the possible under-processing of the affected products discovered by the co-packer during a routine quality audit.
Recalled were a total of 31,579 cases of tuna made in February 2016 and distributed nationally.
The recalled tuna is marked with a can code that starts with a "T" -- for example, TOA2BSCAFB).
Consumers can identify the recalled products by looking at the following information on the cans/labels:
1) Label UPC: 8660000020; 5 oz. Bumble Bee Chunk Light Tuna in Water with “best buy” dates of 02/10/2019, 02/16/2019, 02/17/2019, 02/18/2019, 02/22/2019, 02/23/2019, 02/25/2019
2) Label UPC: 8660000021; 5 oz. Bumble Bee Chunk Light Tuna in Oil; “best buy” date of 02/23/2019.
3) Label UPC: 8660000736; 4-pack of 5 oz. Bumble Bee Chunk Light Tuna in Water; “best buy” dates of 02/9/2019, 02/10/2019, 02/22/2019, 02/29/2019.
Consumers are being advised to throw away any recalled products.

The company said it is working closely with the co-packer and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to get the tuna out of circulation.
