The Manhattan-based Democrat has held his position since 1994, but was under investigation from the U.S. Attorney's office regarding income generated from a law firm that the state sometimes uses to conduct real estate buisiness, nystateofpolitics.com reported.
Reaction to the incident has been swift, with Democratic State Senator Brad Hoylman of Manhattan calling for Silver's resignation, saying it would be "for the good of the people of New York," nystateofpolitics.com said.
The U.S. Attorney's office took up investigations regarding political corruption after Gov. Andrew Cuomo disbanded the Moreland Commission last year, nystateofpolitics.com said.
