The Carmel Town Board is discussing increasing its contribution to the fire department, whose finances were left depleted after former treasurer Michael Klein admitted to embezzling $5.5 million.

In the 2018 proposed budget, the town would contribute $1.2 million, the same as last year. Following Klein's arrest, the town cut the fire department's funding by $500,000.

The fire department needs additional funds to make repairs to its substation and headquarters and lease two new pumper tankers and is seeking an additional $200,000, according to the Putnam Examiner.
