The candidates, Danielle Pack McCarthy and Thomas Robertson, each received 90 votes, according to Village Clerk Pauline Minners.

Nelsonville's village board races are non-partisan, which Minners explained means the candidates have their own parties.

McCarthy ran on the Main Street Party line while Robertson ran on the Thistle Party line, the clerk said.

The votes were counted three times due to the closeness, Minners said.

Two absentee ballots were cast, Minners said, with each candidate receiving one vote.

Minners plans to call the Putnam County Board of Elections Thursday to find out about the precedent for tied races and to figure out what to do next. She said there hasn't been a tied village board race during her time as clerk.

The candidates were running for an open seat currently occupied by Peter Tomann.

Nelsonville, which the U.S. Census lists as being Putnam's smallest municipality with a population in the 600 range, also has a smaller village board than its peers. The board is comprised of just three members -- a mayor and two trustees.
