The first attack occurred at 6 a.m. Saturday, when a jogger was bitten by a fox on Lee Boulevard. A second man was bitten in his backyard on North Deerfield Road at 8:30 a.m., and on Sunday at 12:30 p.m., a woman was bitten in her backyard. All three are receiving preventive rabies treatment.
Police said since that time the department's animal control officer has remained in the North Deerfield Avenue/ Lee Boulevard/ Manchester Road neighborhood for most of the last few days, but there have been no further fox sightings.
Police patrols in that neighborhood have also been increased.
"As always with wildlife here in town, if you come across an animal which you believe to be injured or sick please DO NOT approach the animal and call us at 914-962-4141," the department said.
They also suggest that residents take a moment to review tips from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation for preventing wildlife conflicts:
- Remove food sources such as bird feeders or pet food.
- Eliminate cover and shelter by getting rid of piles of brush, logs, junk, etc., and stash firewood away from your house or other buildings.
- Put up barriers such as chimney covers and soffit vents and fence in areas such as gardens and underneath decks.
“Stay alert and closely supervise children and pets when outside,” said Westchester County Health Commissioner Sherlita Amler, MD. “If you see a fox stay away from it and contact local police immediately.”
