PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. - A 22-year-old was arrested in Putnam County early on Monday morning after driving into a ditch and striking a utility pole while allegedly under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Monday, April 10, New York State Police troopers were dispatched to Lake Shore Road in Patterson, where there were reports of a one-vehicle accident.

According to Trooper Melissa McMorris, New Fairfield, Conn., resident Nicholas Capichiano was traveling northbound on Lake Shore Road when his vehicle exited the roadway, entered a ditch on the east shoulder before traveling across both lanes and striking a utility pole on the west shoulder.

Capichiano was trapped in the vehicle, and first responders had to remove him before he was transported to the Danbury Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

McMorris said that alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor in the crash. Capichiano was charged with driving while ability impaired by the combined influence of drugs or alcohol and unlawful possession of marijuana. He is due back in the Town of Patterson Court later this year.
