Berit Okay, a 52-year-old Brewster resident, turned herself into police Tuesday and was charged burglary in the second degree, a Class C felony, and criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree, a Class E felony after she allegedly entered a home on Avery Road on June 9 through an unlocked door and stole six rings and an iPad from a bedroom, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said.

The homeowner was out of town at the time, but he discovered the crime only a few hours later, when he wirelessly checked his surveillance system and saw footage of the woman in the home, police said.

The homeowner called the Sheriff’s Office to report the crime. While investigators were working the case, the homeowner sent a still image of the suspect to friends on the internet, police said.

Someone recognized Okay and confronted her about the burglary, prompting her to turn herself in, police said. Okay returned the jewelry and electronics to police on June 10.

Okay was arraigned and was remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of $20,000.00 cash bail or bail bond. She is scheduled to appear in the Philipstown Justice Court on July 13.
