PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. -- A Brewster man was charged with DWI and leaving the scene of an accident following a car crash in the village on May 7, said Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith.
Obdulio Mendez-Perez, 28, was arrested after the Sheriff's Office received a report of an erratic driver around 6:57 p.m., near the Dunkin’ Donuts store at 1041 Route 22 in the Town of Southeast, said Capt. William McNamara.
The caller reported that the motorist had nearly hit another car in the parking lot, almost struck the building, and then nearly caused an accident while pulling out of the parking lot onto Route 22. The complainant gave a description of the vehicle and its direction of travel, he added.
A few minutes later, Deputy Adam McKechnie spotted Mendez-Perez on Main Street in the Village of Brewster and saw him strike another vehicle in traffic and then flee the scene, McNamara said.
The deputy stopped the vehicle at Main Street and Railroad Avenue and determined that Mendez-Perez he was intoxicated, he added.
Mendez-Perez was charged with DWI, leaving the scene of an accident and about half-dozen other infractions related to his erratic driving. No injuries were reported in the crash.
He was booked and released and is scheduled to appear in court on May 22.
