Putnam County and state authorities are looking at the books for the department in an effort to follow the money trail, says lohud.com. Michael Klein, former volunteer and treasurer, has resigned amid the probe and faces embezzlement charges, according to lohud.com.

Carmel leaders, meanwhile, are considering slashing the town's taxpayer contribution by about $500,000 to the department, as critics say they've likely overpaid the department. Fire officials said that would put plans to buy a new tanker in jeopardy, lohud.com reports.
